Inspired by large modernist sculptures, the simplicity of Isamu Noguchi, Sci Fi renderings of nature, and bluebells which blossom in Oslo in the spring, Chromodynamic Bluebell is a 15 foot tall sculpture of inch thick plate steel, folded like origami to hold organic forms hinting at growth and flowering nested inside. The color shifts from blues and purples to turquoise and green as the viewer walks past, due to the high tech chromodynamic paint on the flower forms.

Luncheon in the Grotto is a 12x16 feet hand painted mural commissioned by Charli XCX.Through a twirling and dreamlike forest and grotto landscape, we find intimate tableaus of friendly animals tucked away in the lush foliage, a girl swinging from one of the branches of an old oak tree, a bird nestled on top of her eggs, and a woman in Lotus position cheering on the party vibes of the scenario. We encounter a lot of Fisher’s favorite motifs drawn from her South-Florida upbringing, including vibrating leaves with a mysterious gaze, mermaids lounging atop palm fronds, and other magical creatures frolicing in nature.
Pirouetting down the trunk and roots of the giant oak are three dancers all wearing the iconic Tits T-shirts by Vivienne Westwood (1975). Fisher has based this section on a dance piece by Michael Clark wearing a tutu. It also pays tribute to Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2) from 1912.
Another historical reference is the role-reversed Luncheon on the Grass by Édourd Manet from 1862. In this version the women are fully dressed sitting next to a nude male. Female power is a prevalent theme in Fisher's work throughout her practice, as is revisiting and rewriting history from a woman’s perspective.
Dotted throughout the mural are Greek key patterns that move about and turn into checkerboard pathways. The Greek key patterns often surround narrative paintings in murals and vases. They were also prominent in many of Versace’s designs and in the mosaics, terrazzo and throw-pillows at his Miami Mansion, La Villa Casa Casuarina that Fisher has visited and studied many times. The checkered pathway swirls into a Grotto motif with a luring leg protruding from the bushes. As in antiquity these grottos were regarded as dwelling places of divinities.
The dancing theme pays homage to the many collaborations Fisher has realized with professional dancers and choreographers throughout her career, in performance, photo and video. The ballet leg is an ode to dancing all night in the glimmer of the discoball, hanging above the mural, shining light on many of the shimmering iridescent colors used to highlight the movements in the mural. It references &nbsp;another mural Fisher created for Cafe Dancer, a since-closed bar in New York’s Lower East Side, operated by contemporary dancers between 2012 and 2015.
The mural is painted using black matte paint mixed with subtle interference pigments, which are invisible at most angles, but when the light hits right, shimmer like butterfly wings and raver's glitter. The theme and process is an open invitation to get lost in the moment in the night in the grotto.
Luncheon in the Grotto was completed in Spring 2022.

Naomi Fisher: Thermodynamic Flower is part of Bodies of Discovery, an expansive group exhibition taking place over the Summer/Fall of 2021 and featuring a series of performances, films, and installations. Set and performed in outdoor plazas and parks throughout downtown Seattle, this constellation of works explores the (re)activation of the physical body in our again-accessible public space, and will create sites of artistic discovery in unexpected places over the course of the exhibition. The presentations are curated by the Henry Art Gallery, On the Boards, and Velocity Dance Center, and supported by the Metropolitan Improvement District.

For Thermodynamic Flower, Naomi Fisher (b. 1976, Miami, Florida) drives at the tensions between nature and capitalist dynamics via feminist theories and strategies based on surrealist art. Created specifically for this public space, her thermodynamic sculptures made from galvanized steel invites participation. Solar thermal glass tubes arranged in a sunburst formation collect heat, which is then transferred to a flower shape painted with temperature sensitive paint. The sculpture transforms from red to yellow, illustrating metaphorically the sun’s psychological and emotional effects, as well as the literal transformation of solar radiation into heat via green technology. Mirrored surfaces of the leaf-shaped elements reflect the viewers and surroundings, enfolding the audience into the piece itself.

Concrete Flowers (2019)
Screening: September 25Occidental Square (Seattle)

An outdoor screening of the film Concrete Flowers (2019) will complement the exhibition on Saturday September 25, 2021. The film follows dancer Elizabeth Hart through an improvised choreographic exploration of Las Pozas. The space is a sculptural garden in Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, Mexico designed and built by surrealist artist Edward James. Beginning with an anecdote of a frost destroying the precious flowers one day, Fisher weaves together a visual vocabulary that draws inspiration from the dreams and practices of other surrealist artists. The film explores the human desire to impose monuments that transcend the powers of time and nature.

Givenchy and the National Foundation for
YoungArts commissioned two new mirrored

stainless steel sculptures presented during Art
Basel Miami Beach at the Givenchy shop in the

Design District.

Inspired by Arecaceae (the botanical name
for the palm family), mirrored surfaces

create a feeling of invisibility, vibrating with
reflections of viewer and surroundings in sci-fi

abstractions of the natural world.

The building’s six-story façade is made up of 226 sculpted concrete panels that grid&nbsp;together as an abstraction of palm trunks and fronds.

<img width="1025" height="1280" width_o="1025" height_o="1280" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e1cf6d037ef828ddb27e70c2aef0fb1017c5a7b5b88eead9579da6a787e995bb/NaomiFisher_042718__M3A0032.jpeg" data-mid="111592486" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e1cf6d037ef828ddb27e70c2aef0fb1017c5a7b5b88eead9579da6a787e995bb/NaomiFisher_042718__M3A0032.jpeg" />

For the floor of the building’s main and office lobbies, Fisher created unique terrazzo artworks based on the palm frond theme established in the entryway. The forms are delineated by brass and aluminum metal work and filled with terrazzo - a composite of recycled glass, mother of pearl, naturalstones, and resin.

Fisher’s design process begins with hand-drawn sketches that evolve into unique sculptures created incollaboration with artisans.<img width="512" height="786" width_o="512" height_o="786" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/51c0ba73d8574745171cf09a9a75e8a2f52c3143ecbd9ac16afdb35e14c6f222/NAOMI-FISHER---PUBLIC-ART---12-2018-8.jpg" data-mid="107423910" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/512/i/51c0ba73d8574745171cf09a9a75e8a2f52c3143ecbd9ac16afdb35e14c6f222/NAOMI-FISHER---PUBLIC-ART---12-2018-8.jpg" />
Hand drawn studies are part of a sequence of classical techniques used to create original clay sculptures which are cast in concrete and attached to&nbsp;the building facade, structurally engineered to withstand a category 4 hurricane.

The palm theme continues into the lobby where a repeating pattern of Arecaceae trunks, inspired by her botanist father’s favorite palm and the Codina’s Cuban&nbsp;heritage, is wallpapered opposite the elevators. Fisher’s framed nature studies hang side by side with select concrete casts of individual frieze panels revealing the process from initial drawing to final artwork.

On the wall hang six works: three drawings and three concrete sculptures. Palm Trunk, Kingfisher, and Palm Frond, are graphite studies that were then sculpted by hand in clay, and cast in rubber molds to make the concrete sculptures. In the drawings, excerpts of text alluding to the significance of the chosen nature scenes appear throughout, as in the origin myth of “halcyon days” calligraphed into Kingfisher.
<img width="640" height="427" width_o="640" height_o="427" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b775e4f4dabde4cb6b6db62b17fb9a5737d9b4e5b386d60ecef62b99b0da4f11/_MG_9767.jpeg" data-mid="107442202" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/640/i/b775e4f4dabde4cb6b6db62b17fb9a5737d9b4e5b386d60ecef62b99b0da4f11/_MG_9767.jpeg" />
Fisher’s Terrazo floor continues into the elevator lobby, winding through the hallway. Across from theelevators is an installation of works on paper explaining the motifs in the artwork, next to individual cast concrete sculptures, installed atop Fisher’s digital print wallpaper of the carvings of Aracacea palm trunks.
